GLOSSARY OF TERMS:

Bronze
  • This is the level of dance that includes all dance patterns from the beginning level up to the intermediate level.
Championship
  • This is the highest level of dance for either Latin, Smooth or Standard Amateurs.
Dance Levels
  • This is the level of dance, such as Newcomer, Bronze, Open Silver and many more.
DanceSport
  • The sport of two or more people engaged in the sport of dance. Originally, it was in reference to Ballroom Dancing, but has been adopted to include all types of dance.
Event
  • An event is also known as a HEAT. This is any instance during a competition where one or more couples compete for a certain level of a certain style of dance. For example, Novice Standard is an event and so is Pre-Novice Latin.
Gold
  • This is the level of dance that includes all advanced dance patterns.
International
  • This is the style of dance that is considered to be the standard dance found all over the world.
Latin
  • This includes Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble and Jive. The combination of these dances depends on the event, such as Novice or Championship.
Novice
  • This event is geared for those that are not necessarily beginners, but not yet advanced. This event normally consists of two dances, such as Cha-Cha and Rumba (Latin) or Waltz and Quickstep (Standard), just to name a few. Sometimes it will consist of three dances. Both dances, or all three dances are danced in succession with enough time between each dance to establish a starting place on the dance floor for the next dance.
  • This event is usually offered in either 'Closed' or 'Open'. 'Novice Closed' requires that the dancers include patterns found in the syllabus only. 'Novice Open' allows dancers to dance patterns not necessarily found in any syllabus.
Pre-Championship
  • Often called Pre-Champ, this event includes advanced dancers that are about to enter the amateur championships. This event usually includes four dances; Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive (Latin) or Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep (Standard). Some Competitions include all five dances in each event.
Pre-Novice
  • This event is geared for the beginning dancers and usually requires the dancers to dance within a given syllabus.
Pro/Am
  • An abbreviation used to denote a partnership which includes a professional dancer and an amateur dancer.
Professional
  • An instructor or a dancer that has exceeded all levels of amateur competition, but not necessarily instructing.
Silver
  • This is the level of dance that includes all intermediate dance patterns.
Smooth
  • This is American style, sometimes refered to as American Smooth. This includes Watz, Tango, Viennese Waltz and Foxtrot.
Standard
  • This is the International Standard style. This includes Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot and Quickstep.
Syllabus
  • This refers to the list of patterns available for each style of dance, such as a Reverse Turn, Cross-over break and so on.
